Day One 17.00: Drug Monster is EVERYWHERE!

I decided to walk from work to the train station instead of taking the bus for the usual short five minute ride. Walking to the station would take me around fifteen minutes and I thought it would be a good way to start my new exercise regime that I had promised myself that I would do in conjunction with my new drug free lifestyle. I needed to take every opportunity that I could to use as exercise that came my way, where I would be presented with a choice of either escalators or few flights of stairs, or a bus ride or a walk.I remember thinking that I thought I was quite fit until I decided to slowly jog up four flights of ten steps at my local metro station. I was not quite fit at all. I couldn’t believe how much out of breath I was.

I was so angry with myself that I decided there and then to never take an escalator again if the stairs were no more than six flights. This soon made me realize how much “Drug Monster” (nicotine addiction) sucks out your health and stamina to become bigger and more overpowering of you. I did become noticeably fitter within only four weeks of changing my ways when it came too stairs. The walk to the train station was actually quite pleasant for the first few minutes but then it happened. I began to notice more and more people around me with cigarettes. I began to see all the cigarettes ends on the floor around my feet and there were thousands. They were everywhere. Also, crumpled or flattened empty cigarette packets kept making an appearance every 20 yards or so. I looked up to the heavens, rolled my eyes and came to an abrupt halt, and just stood there.I looked at the cigarette butts on the floor around my feet. They looked dead, dirty, black and filthy. I told myself that this is the place they always finish, on the floor, in a gutter. I told myself that the beautiful shiny glossy cigarette packets that they come in are just an illusion but the reality of what they really were was here, under my feet. Litter on the street, contaminating our world, our lives and our health.I watched as three men walked passed with cans of beer in their hands and a freshly lit cigarette in the other. They passed me and probably wondered to themselves why I was just standing still in the middle of the street doing nothing. I remembered to force myself to feel pity for other smokers when I saw them. I saw them. I smelt them too.

I looked across the street as a car raced by and the driver had his window down, music loud and a cigarette dangling from his mouth as he went by. I pitied him. I looked along the pavement where I stood and the distinctive image of scattered cigarette butts flowed along it. “Our society is poisoned,” I thought. I felt sad.I felt I had reached a pinnacle moment in my life where I had finally realized how much our “Fucking us always” Governments love us. We are completely surrounded by a trap and they allow it. They allow our children to be fooled by this evil doing. I looked ahead and the train station caught my view.“You got to overcome this Anthony,” I said to myself. “Your going to see this situation probably everyday of your life and you got to remember that this is not real life. This is the illusion that is around us.” I added to my thought.I started to walk again. But now I was more determined to eliminate this evil from my life. I went back in to my defensive, confident mode that I knew would save it. “Bring it on Drug Monster, bring it on!” I said as I continued to the station, smiling. I was on the platform when my mobile phone rang. It was Livia.

“Hola You” I said.
“Hi Babe” she said back.
“How are ya?” I asked.
“Good. Thanks. Hey did you smoke?” She questioned.
“Nope” I answered proudly.

“Sure?” She pushed.

“No I didn’t smoke and I will not smoke ever again” I raised my voice sweetly

“Good” She replied.

“What’s up babe?” I asked. “Everything OK?”

“Yes, listen I have a great idea. It’s Friday, let’s go out tonight” Her voice happy and suggestive.

“Oh shit!” I thought, because in Madrid, almost every bar is a “smoking allowed” bar.

“I will speak to you later at home babe, my train’s here OK? Bye” I said as I pressed the tiny red phone symbol on my mobile.

Immediately Drug Monster started to intimidate me once again when he knew that after hearing Livia mention about going out tonight, there might just be a possibility for him to bounce back and get his fix, his food, finally. I actually remember this moment very vividly. It was so powerful. Livia spoke about going out, I thought about all the people smoking around us if we did go out, and Drug Monster smiled rubbing his hands together in anticipation. Although his actions are somewhat deadly, it’s still funny when he pops up. I actually created and gave him a face, a body, so that I could see his actions and behaviors whilst also seeing him suffer and pathetically make weak attempts to get me back to smoking. But yet, without my help, this character became self sufficient and functioned freely without any help from me once I created him visually. Nonetheless still, it was funny to me.

TIP:Remember that at times your subconscious mind will be reminded way before your conscious mind, about your past life as a smoker. These reminders are so indirect but so powerful nonetheless. This is the power of this drug.Your conscious thoughts could be thinking about a beach in Hawaii, but your junkie subconscious mind will still be on a tobacco train of thought. You must try to recognize when this happens as soon as possible. Eventually you will, naturally, as you get past more and more days without nicotine. But I recommend that you try to notice these indirect reminders and possible traps sooner than later. When you do, you will start to see the kind of power and ability to trap us again that nicotine has. It is invisibly related to society and your subconscious mind always. Be aware. When it does happen, you have to laugh at “Drug Monster” and carry on with your objective. It’s not difficult to do because when you actually realize and recognize this indirect trap, you begin to feel good about yourself and that you are smarter than something so huge and powerful in our society that you want it to try again. Your confidence grows and with each feeble attempt it makes, you know that you will be ready and take anything that it throws at you.

“Ha ha ha ha” I laughed out loud sarcastically.

People on the platform looked at me with eyebrows raised. Did I care?

“Ha ha ha ha” Again I blurted, my smile bigger now.

It was a smart move by him. Yes very smart. Almost stealth like, to get my subconscious mind back to thinking about having cigarettes before my conscious mind would stop him.

“Nice try” I was talking to Drug Monster now

“Do you honestly think that if we go out tonight that your coming too?” I questioned him.

I continued “Well here’s the news dude… Even if you do come out with us tonight you’re going to wish you didn’t, because now, I enjoy seeing you suffer. Remember, in the past, you enjoyed seeing me suffer. Well the tables have turned my friend. No tapas for you ever again!“

The train came to a halt and the doors hissed as they opened. I boarded and sat down next to a window to enjoy the now fading light of the pink autumn sky that held me captive for the rest of my journey to the metro station. I was contemplating how much more enjoyable the rest of my life was going to be.
